Deputy Prosecutor General Pironeva
Participates in 16th Plenary Meeting of
Consultative Council of European Prosecutors

Sofia, November 26 (BTA) - Bulgarian Deputy Prosecutor General Desislava Pironeva took part in the 16th Plenary Meeting of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors (CCPE) in Strasbourg, France, Pironeva's service said in a press release on Friday.

"We backed the stand taken by the participants that, in the light of the international courts' judgments and reckoning with the specificities of the prosecutors' status, the independence of the prosecution should be perceived in a similar way as the independence that is guaranteed to judges," Pironeva said.

"During the discussions on mechanisms to guarantee this independence, we clarified that the Bulgarian Constitution precludes political control over prosecutors and that the basic law contains explicit and absolute guarantees to this effect. These guarantees are also enshrined at the legislative level and, on the other hand, the independence of the prosecution is also upheld by decisions of the Bulgarian Constitutional Court," the Deputy Prosecutor General added.
