New Generation of Wild Sturgeon in Danube
New Generation of Wild Sturgeon in Danube
Sofia, August 10 (BTA) - Experts from WWF Bulgaria have caught
two small unmarked wild sturgeon near the village of Vetren,
Northeastern Bulgaria, which indicates the presence of a new
generation of wild sturgeon in the Danube, WWF said.
The WWF experts say the wild sturgeon populations are extremely
small given that the two fish were caught after a month-long
daily sampling and hundreds of nets which caught nothing.
The two fish are a starry sturgeon 920 cm) and a sterlet (22
cm).
The experts assume that the two fish were hatched upstream in
the Danube in early April and are now about three months old.
