Prosecutor General Geshev on Working Visit to Brussels

Sofia, January 26 (BTA) - Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev is on a working visit to Brussels, where he will hold meetings with representatives of the European Parliament, the prosecution service said on Wednesday.  

The focus of the talks will be on the role of the judiciary and in particular the Prosecutor's Office in establishing the principles of the rule of law in Bulgaria, as well as the related challenges facing this country. The meetings will also address the legislative framework in the context of the ongoing judicial reform in Bulgaria to bring national legislation up to European standards.      

Prosecutor General Geshev will acquaint members of the European Parliament with issues related to the protection of the rights of the LGBTI community, minority groups and disadvantaged people and the role of the prosecution service in overcoming them, and with the leading role of the institution in preventing harmful foreign influence affecting the European Union and NATO member countries.

During his visit to Brussels, Ivan Geshev will take part in an online meeting dedicated to monitoring democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Bulgaria, organized by the members of the LIBE Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group. In this regard, the Prosecutor's Office has sent to the members of the Monitoring Group information on the status of previously discussed issues, the release says.
