Socialists Mull No-confidence Vote over Cabinet's Foreign Policy
Sofia, September 28 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) is considering to move for a no-confidence vote against the government over its foreign policy, it emerged on Wednesday.
In a statement BSP leader Kornelia Ninova said: "Arguments for a no-confidence vote against the government over its foreign policy have been piling up. We'll invite for consultations the other parliamentary parties to discuss the motives and if we reach agreement, we'll submit the motion."
BSP believe that Irina Bokova should stay in the race for the UN top post as she still has the odds in her favour. Earlier on Wednesday in Parliament Ninova urged Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov to present in Parliament the motives of the government to nominate Kristalina Georgieva as UN Secretary General.
The socialists said the decision of the government was "a shame for Bulgaria". "This seems as bowing down to foreign pressure against Bulgaria national interests," Ninova told journalists. According to her, with this decision the government had undermined all chances for a Bulgarian candidate to head the organization.
Speaking to the media in Parliament, Ninova said the government's decision to withdraw Bokova was the last straw. However it had been preceded by a series of actions in connection with the way the government is handling the refugee crisis.
Ninova denied that plans to move for a no-confidence motion are an election ploy.
ABV leader Georgi Purvanov said that ABV will support the no-confidence vote as it has been long called for. According to him, the main problem is that Bulgaria's foreign policy is ideologized, which is harmful to the country in the region where it is situated. He said: "Bulgaria hasn't had such a weak, passive, inefficient, harmful and antinational diplomacy in 130 years."
