Member of Parliament Indicted for Concluding Detrimental Deal in 2009

Sofia, April 12 (BTA) - The prosecution service indicted Svetla Buchvarova-Piralkova MP for concluding a deal in 2009 that caused the Agricultural Academy to lose 1.3 million leva in profit, the Prosecution of Bulgaria reported on Tuesday.

At the time of the detrimental deal, Buchvarova-Piralkova chaired the Governing Council of the Agricultural Academy. The loss of profit resulted from leasing out 973 hectares of Academy-controlled farmland in Strazhitsa and Karvouna, Northern Bulgaria, at a price below market levels.

On March 21, 2016, Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov asked the National Assembly to strip Buchvarova-Piralkova of her immunity as an MP in order to face criminal prosecution. Later that day, she gave up her immunity voluntarily.
