Vice President Popova Addresses Participants in UNESCO Conference against Youth Radicalization
Paris/Sofia, June 16 (BTA) - Vice President Margarita Popova
addressed the participants in an international conference
entitled "Youth and the Internet: Fighting Radicalization and
Extremism" in Paris. The forum, which opened Tuesday, is
organized by UNESCO and Popova is a special guest at the
invitation of UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
Popova focused on the risks of the necessary and unquestionable
progress of ICT, cyber extremism and terrorism, and the need to
reconsider the views of digital networks and cultures, which are
a field of identity rivalry and battles. These networks are
needed as a bastion of real trust and understanding between
people belonging to different cultures, Popova said.
The Bulgarian Vice President also said intercultural education
is a key factor against the radicalization of young people. She
estimated highly Bokova's contribution to involving young people
and political elites in defence of human rights and the
protection of the world cultural heritage, including her
initiatives concerning the heritage zones in Iraq and Syria, and
the inclusion of the protection of cultural heritage in a UN
resolution, among others.
