NATO Command and Control Unit in Bulgaria to be in Sofia
Smolyan, Southwestern Bulgaria, February 7 (BTA) - NATO's
Command and Control Unit in Bulgaria will be in Sofia, Defence
Minister Nikolai Nenchev told a news conference, noting that the
unit could be set up in a matter of months. The establishment
of the unit will to a large extent depend on the readiness of
the other partners as half of the staff of the unit will be
people from foreign countries, Nenchev said.
The Defence Minister said the unit will have a staff of
approximately 40 military, half of whom Bulgarian. NATO's
Command and Control Unit in Bulgaria is one of the six such
centres the Alliance establishes in Eastern Europe after a
decision to this effect on Thursday in Brussels.
Approached by a reporter, Nenchev said that NATO's latest
meeting in Brussels considered two possible options, which
constitute threats - from the east and from the south. NATO does
not underestimates either of them, he said, implying the crisis
in Ukraine and the developments with the Islamic State.
